Why the World Marries | Susan Bartels | TEDxQueensU

More than 650 million women alive today have experienced child marriage, with more than one in three of these women being married before the age of 15. Without a reduction in child marriage, the number of women married as children globally will reach 1.2 billion by 2050. Child marriage is widely recognized as a human rights violation and as a form of gender-based violence. Dr. Susan Bartels is an emergency medicine physician and clinician-scientist at Queen’s University. Dr. Bartels conducts global public health research focused on how women and children are impacted by humanitarian crises. She is interested in using innovative methods to improve knowledge and understanding of health-related topics in complex environments. In her talk, Dr. Bartels discusses underlying factors leading to increased rates of child marriage within the Syrian refugee crisis using research conducted in Lebanon in partnership with the ABAAD Resource Center for Gender Equality and supported by the Sexual Violence Research Initiative and the World Bank Group. Dr. Susan Bartels is an emergency physician and clinician-scientist at Queen’s University. In addition to practicing clinical medicine, she conducts global public health research focused on how women and children are impacted by humanitarian crises around the world. While much of her work has been in Sub-Saharan Africa, she has also worked in the Middle East with the Syrian crisis as well as in Asia and Haiti. She is currently the lead investigator on research projects funded by the World Bank Group / Sexual Violence Research Initiative, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Enhanced Learning and Research for Humanitarian Assistance. Dr. Bartels is interested in using innovative methods to improve knowledge and understanding of health-related topics in complex environments such as armed conflict, post-conflict settings, and natural disasters.
