How Did You Get Into That? | Baba Brinkman | TEDxNavesink

Understanding evolution leads to understanding yourself and others. Hip-hop music and culture is more sophisticated than you think. We are all cut from the same cloth, so we should love and respect each other. Both genes and the cultural inheritance that shapes our identities are subject to unmistakably Darwinian evolution, and can be studied scientifically. Using rap music, digital media and pop-culture as a locus of identity-construction and identity-performance, we can apply this scientific analysis to achieve a deeper understanding of ourselves and the many ways our identities are capable of uniting and dividing us. Baba Brinkman is a Canadian rap artist, playwright, and former tree planter based in New York City. He is best known for his "Rap Guide" series of science-based hip-hop albums and theater shows, including Rap Guides to Evolution, Climate Change, and Religion. Baba is also a pioneer in the genre of “lit-hop” or literary hip-hop, known for his adaptations of The Canterbury Tales, Beowulf, and Gilgamesh. He is a recent recipient of the National Center for Science Education’s “Friend of Darwin Award” for his efforts to improve the public understanding of evolutionary biology. Baba tours and performs regularly and has spoken at several TEDx conferences and performed at the World Science Festival. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
