Free the map: creative, artistic and democratic mapmaking | Henk van Houtem | TEDxYouth@Maastricht

Maps are everywhere around us, but what do they actually mean? A passionate talk about the geopolitics of borders around the globe. In this talk, he will focus on the art of mapping borders. Not only global movements of people, information and good happen cross-borders, but also borders provide the basis for ideological or identity divisions. As a new academic terrain, cartopolitics builds from critical geopolitics, border studies and radical cartography. Van Houtum will make a plea to free the map from political statecraft and cleansing it in favor of artistic, creative and democratic mapmaking. To this end, he will argue to make a radically new collection of maps, no longer termed after the God Atlas, but after the God Hermes. Henk van Houtum is professor of political geography and geopolitics at Radboud University and Bergamo University. He is co-director of the master specialisations on 1) Conflicts, Territories and Identities and on 2) Europe: Borders, Identities and Governance. He publishes on global justice, borders, migration, identities, cartography and the geopolitics of football. He is also a columnist for the Dutch national newspaper, Volkskrant.nl, and Dutch regional paper, De Gelderlander. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
