Through data acquired from personal research, marine biologist Ruben van Hooidonk explores the current extent and future ramifications of climate change upon the world's coral reefs. Hooidonk hopes to inspire viewers to adopt lifestyle changes that help the environment. Ruben van Hooidonk is a marine biologist working for the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies at UM and the NOAAâs Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory. He studies the effects of anthropogenic climate change on the worlds coral reef ecosystems. Using satellite data and climate models Dr. van Hooidonk projects impacts of both ocean acidification and increasing temperatures on coral reefs. His work has been used in influential reports including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changeâs fifth assessment report and recently in an assessment of the vulnerability of US shellfisheries to ocean acidification. Ruben studied biology in the Netherlands which included extensive fieldwork in the Caribbean. His PhD in Earth and Atmospheric sciences was earned at Purdue in Indiana. Ruben loves Miamiâs tropical climate (especially after 4 winters in Indiana), bicycle polo, brewing beer and good vegetarian food. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
