The Double Edge of Language: Neighbor/Enemy: Double Edge of Shibboleth | Clay Scott | TEDxUMontana

Shared language creates instant familiarity and a sense of intimacy, but in times of war or conflict, language can become a weapon. Language is used to draw distinctions between us and our neighbors, to dehumanize the other and create the enemy. Clay Scott is an Emmy Award winning radio producer and documentarian, based in Helena, Montana. He spent many years as a foreign correspondent for ABC News and Monitor Radio, covering wars, conflicts and disasters throughout the Balkans, the Middle East, Russia, and Africa. He studied folklore, anthropology, and Arabic at the University of California at Berkeley, receiving a Fulbright to Damascus, Syria, for anthropological and ethno-linguistic research. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
