Urban Folk | Shashwat Srivastava | TEDxIIFTDelhi

Shashwat talks about growing up in a musical home, and how being categorically denied from becoming one, in fact became the reason for his musical success. The talk explores the cacophony of sounds a modern metropolis contains, and how this is the new folk. Shashwat explores how all folk music across the world is similar, how music happens when human beings interact with nature, and how "urban" folk is no different. 'Folka Dots' is a band dedicated to exploring urban folk music of India. It was founded in 2010, with a passion for exploring new trends in the folk music of India. It currently consists of Shashwat, Biswajit, Vaishali, Devanshi, Kartikeya, Paras, Parichay. Growing up in Lucknow, Shashwat's early attempts at formal music training were spectacular failures, making him entirely self-taught as a musician. The cacophony of his childhood in Lucknow had a deep influence on him, explores in the new genre he calls urban folk. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
