Ascents of Honor | Thom Pollard | TEDxYouth@CEHS

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In January of 2013, Thom Pollard was filming Iraq War amputee Keith Zeier’s ascent of Mount Washington when suddenly the entire group was caught in a deadly avalanche that swept them 800 feet down a ravine. Miraculously, they all survived. Pollard, adventurer, photographer and award-winning film maker marvels at the courage and commitment Zeier displayed before, during, and after this life-changing experience and reflects on what a modern-day hero looks like. Thom Pollard has won many international awards including an Emmy Award (Orphan Orca: PBS/Regional Emmy) nominated for a CINE Golden Eagle (Lost on Everest: BBC/PBS Nova). Thom travels the country as a keynote speaker for events, schools and corporations. He uses his adventure photography, paired with his 20+ years of mountaineering and exploration experience, as a backdrop for his motivational themes. Thom is the creative Director at Eyes Open Productions, a full service production company that emphasizes the power of collaborative creativity for success. One of his proudest accomplishments is creating a Pop Warner Football program for his son to continue playing quarterback in middle school. His adventure accomplishments include; helping build and sail an ancient-styled Reed ship from South America to Easter Island, filming the life-saving efforts by scientists of an orphaned orca as they reintroduced it to its family (this was the first successful reintroduction of an orca ever accomplished), and taking part in the discovery of the preserved body of Everest explorer George Mallory 75 years after his disappearance. He has filmed for National Geographic, PBS Nova, Discovery, and NBC Sports and s a member of The Explorers Club and the American Alpine Club. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
