This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In the Kyrgyz Republic, it is possible to kidnap a woman and make her your bride. While the Kyrgyz people often describe this practice as ancient and outdated, its origins are surprisingly modern, and surprisingly closely tied to women's increasing autonomy in other areas. Christopher Gross an academic advisor who prepares international students to attend university or graduate school in the U.S. Trained as an anthropologist, he began his teaching career in Chinese Central Asia and Kyrgyzstan. His research covers a variety of topics, ranging from the 2005 Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan and organized crime, to Central Asian gender systems.
