Plastic to Candy | Gerben Stouten | TEDxAmsterdam 2014

www.tedxamsterdam.com Human beings produce large quantities of waste and garbage. In this day and age, it is increasingly more difficult to dispose of human waste. At the same time, it is getting harder and harder to obtain products that are less harsh to our environment at a reasonable price. Fortunately, Gerben Stouten, a biochemist, is a man who may have some answers to this dilemma. A Delft University alumni, Gerben is a huge believer in the ways of nature. and has come to the realization that nature always operates in a cyclic manner. Gerben has developed a method by which certain of our waste products can be transformed into usable plastics. By introducing specialized bacteria into the human waste and then putting it into a centrifugal process, he can turn the waste product into two separate components - pure plastic and pure water â€" both perfectly usable and valuable in their right. When asked about his process, Gerben claims that his research relies on the endless diversity present in nature. “We merely design the processes that allow nature to show its majestic solutions.” he smiles.
