Honeysuckle: The "green junkie" | Ton van Oostwaard | TEDxAmsterdam 2014

www.tedxamsterdam.com Ton van Oostwaard is an engineer on a mission. Currently the initiator of the 'Green Climate' zone, Ton is trying to clear the air surrounding the city of Amsterdam. Through the Ecorridors project, van Oostwaard has taken a leading role in environmental conservation, by developing ideal ecological surroundings through climate, adaptive vegetation and associated management methods. One of the methods is a pollution belt. Van Oostwaard realized early on that the Amsterdam surroundings were arid and mostly empty, the best place to plant a green belt. He talks about super-charging this process and absorbing the pollution around Amsterdam, faster. “I live and breathe landscape”, he says. For forty years, he has been doing just that. One of the pollution-clearing plants is the humble honeysuckle. This plant is a green junkie, one that is addicted to consuming pollution.. His plan is to create a green corridor around the city, covering 25 hectares of land, with honeysuckle and other pollution absorbing plants. This should help in keeping Amsterdam a green and clean city.
