Bringing Back the Brass | Yarrabah Brass Band | TEDxJCUCairns

The Yarrabah Brass Band has a long and rich history dating back to the 1900s and spanning generations. Until the 1960s the Indigenous Community of Yarrabah had one of the best brass bands in QLD. After almost 40s of hiatus the band was revived in 2013 and consists of Yarrabah community members of all ages. Yarrabah was established as a mission community in 1892. Over the years, subsequent government administrations forcibly relocated Aboriginal and some South Sea Islander peoples from far and wide, to Yarrabah. As a consequence, most local residents can claim both traditional and historical ties to the area. Current Yarrabah Brass band members consist of descendants from the original band formed in 1901 and honorary members such as legendary musician James Morrison. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
