Plastic Madonna | Peter Smith | TEDxAmsterdam 2014 (SIGN LANGUAGE)

www.tedxamsterdam.com Peter Smith is the founder and creative director of the Amsterdam-based initiative Foundation Klean, which is essentially an idea-based environmentally aware group. Smith’s main contribution to the foundation is the development of ideas and innovation, which he believes can only be optimized by the subjugation of the ego. The flagship project by Klean has been the construction of a 12 meter-wide statue of the Madonna. The statue has been 3D-printed using recycled non-biodegradable plastic litter. To achieve this, almost every 3D printer in the Netherlands has been used, each printing a small piece of the structure. The statue depicts a breast-feeding Madonna and now is known as the Plastic Madonna. Peter is hoping that this concept will help restore faith in humanity. Symbolically, Smith believes that this represents the first step on the path that may lead the world to more crowd-sourced way of project construction. This, he believes is a way to put the plastic litter around us to a greater creative purpose.
